How to Correctly Test Your Car's Battery

Being able to test your car battery safely will allow you to be in the position to know when it is about to or is failing.
  • Before you can test the car battery, the car ignition and lights must be off.
  • The car battery terminals should be clean, use a wire brush to remove any built-up corrosion.
  • Using a voltmeter, attach the positive cable on your positive battery terminal. The negative voltmeter cable will then be placed on the battery negative terminal.
  • Look at the reading, there is nothing wrong if the voltmeter shows a reading at or higher than 12.4 on the screen. If the reading is 12.2 or less, the battery might be out of cranking power and has lost the ability to hold a charge and should be replaced.
Our team at Hendrick Alfa Romeo FIAT of Cary is here to test or replace the battery if it is not performing optimally.
